Aside from being naughty and immoral, are there legal statutes for trying to guess someone's email account password to access it? They are spreading lies and malicious emails so it is justified in a way.

the only way you'd get in trouble for accessing someone else's email account is if you were the one "spreading lies and malicious emails"
there was a case recently where a husband hacked into his wife's email account and sent naked/sexual photos that he'd taken of her to her friends/family/co-workers. apparently they were going through a nasty divorce and that was his way of getting back at her but it backfired cause she called the police and he got in trouble for "impersonating" her on the internet.
so yes, you can get into their email, but if you send messages pretending to be that person, that is illegal
