i recently had to change my email address and the old one is the email address that i used on itunes. can i make a new account without itunes deleting my songs? will it delete my songs the next time that i plug in my ipod?

You don't need a new account to do that.
Just go to the iTunes store and click account from the top right. Then sign in and click Edit Account Info. Then you can change your email address and password there.
